For employee truck drivers on a LAFHA
The allowance on your payslip, actually explained.
GoTaxationHub is written for wage-earning truck drivers who receive a Living Away From Home Allowance — what it means for your pay, your tax return, and the deductions you can still claim. Written for employee drivers, not general taxpayers.
What LAFHA actually is
A fringe benefit your employer pays and accounts for — not taxable wages you need to declare yourself.
How it differs from a travel allowance
Two allowances that can look similar on a payslip are taxed in completely different ways.
What you can still claim
Receiving LAFHA doesn’t rule out other work-related deductions on your own return.
About Us
Built for wage-earning drivers on a living-away-from-home allowance
GoTaxationHub is written specifically for employee truck drivers who are paid a Living Away From Home Allowance by their employer. Written for employee drivers, not general taxpayers.
LAFHA is treated differently to ordinary wages: it’s a fringe benefit your employer accounts for, not an amount you typically declare yourself. That difference causes real confusion, especially when a payslip also shows a separate travel or meal allowance that’s taxed the usual way.
GoTaxationHub is an information resource, not a registered tax agent. Whether an allowance you receive qualifies as a genuine LAFHA depends on your own arrangement with your employer — check your payslip and income statement against what’s explained here, or speak with a registered tax agent.
- Plain English firstTerms like LAFHA, fringe benefit and reasonable travel allowance are translated, not assumed.
- Worked examples, not just rulesEvery concept comes with a number attached, using real wage-earning driver scenarios.
- Reviewed on a scheduleGuides are dated and revisited as ATO rates and thresholds change.
- Not tied to one transport companyThe same rules apply whoever you drive for.

Key points
The essentials, before anything else
Five things worth understanding before you touch your tax return.
Keep every receipt
The ATO can ask you to substantiate a claim at any time. A bank statement on its own usually isn’t enough — keep the actual receipt or invoice.
Your LAFHA
Paid as a fringe benefit, not wages — it’s usually not included in your assessable income and doesn’t need a matching deduction.
Minor purchases
Work items costing $300 or less can usually be claimed in full in the same year’s return — no need to spread the cost.
Major purchases
Anything over $300 is written down over its effective life under the ATO’s depreciation schedules — often around three years for everyday tools, though it varies by item.
Use of a motor vehicle
Trips in your own car for work — not your truck, and not the commute — can be deductible using the cents-per-kilometre method, capped at 5,000 km per car each year.
